As its title suggests, "Uncertainty Management in Information Systems" is a book about how information systems can be made to manage information permeated with uncertainty. This subject is at the intersection of two areas of knowledge: information systems is an area that concentrates on the design of practical systems that can store and retrieve information; uncertainty modeling is an area in artificial intelligence concerned with accurate representation of uncertain information and with inference and decision-making under conditions infused with uncertainty. New applications of information systems require stronger capabilities in the area of uncertainty management. Our hope is that lasting interaction between these two areas would facilitate a new generation of information systems that will be capable of servicing these applications. Although there are researchers in information systems who have addressed themselves to issues of uncertainty, as well as researchers in uncertainty modeling who have considered the pragmatic demands and constraints of information systems, to a large extent there has been only limited interaction between these two areas. As the subtitle, "From Needs to Solutions," indicates, this book presents view points of information systems experts on the needs that challenge the uncer tainty capabilities of present information systems, and it provides a forum to researchers in uncertainty modeling to describe models and systems that can address these needs.", This is a book about how information systems can be made to manage information permeated with uncertainty. This subject is at the intersection of two areas of knowledge: information systems is an area that concentrates on the design of practical systems that can store and retrieve information; uncertainty modelling is an area in artificial intelligence concerned with accurate representation of uncertain information and with inference and decision-making under conditions infused with uncertainty., Uncertainty Management in Information Systems: From Needs to Solutions is a book about how information systems can be made to manage information permeated with uncertainty. The first part of this book describes issues and challenges in the area of imperfect information that confront information systems, and the second part covers the principal theories for modeling imperfect information, and shows how these theories may be adapted to information systems. All chapters are original contributions and present solutions that have been applied and the experiences that have been gained from those solutions. The material has been closely edited by the book's editors for content, consistency and style. This authoritative book is state-of-the-art coverage of 'Uncertainty Management in Information Systems'.

A highlight of the book is the array of applications with which each method is illustrated, like deployment and retrieval of tethered satellites, antenna deployment, comparing simulation results with laboratory test data, extrusion from a rotating shuttle of scientific test booms undergoing large deflection, underwater vehicles connected by a cable to a ship, and doing mine search on sea floors, and flexible rockets launching satellites.Presents new strategies for controlling the micro- and nanomorphology and the mechanical properties of multiphase polymeric materials.Or quit smoking. Or write a novel, start an exercise program, get out of debt, or conquer shyness and meet new people.Written by Dr. Robert Maurer, a psychologist on the staff of both the University of Washington School of Medicine and Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center, and an expert on kaizen who speaks and consults nationally, One Small Step Can Change Your Life is the gentle but potent way to effect change. This book is the first to cover mobile cloud computing systems exclusively. These results often precede journal publication and represent the most current research. It features some of the major advances in the research on mobile cloud computing and will be useful to researchers and practitioners involved in mobile communications., With recent advances in mobile communication technologies, more and more people are accessing cloud computing systems using mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets. The authors build on their recent work investigating the nature and perception of sound as used in computer games and virtual environments, and put forward a unique argument that sound is a fundamentally virtual phenomenon.Havens shows us that we need to look the robot in the eye if we want to maintain our humanity.Author InformationGuy Hundy studied Mechanical Engineering at Leeds University, UK.
